Pokémon GO is a great example of ‘what should we be saving?’ Pokémon GO is more than just a passing trend and money making cellphone app; it is also the successor to a previous game, Ingress (https://www.ingress.com/). Ingress effectively deployed a game mechanic that resulted in crowd-sourced data, which was then used to build Pokémon GO (http://mashable.com/2016/07/10/john-hanke-pokemon-go/#CwYTIPyPemqr). So Pokémon GO includes more than just the game code, the hardware to play it, a cellular network or wi-fi connection, and the cultural phenomenon; it also includes a data model, a previous game, GPS data, etc.
Let’s say that we have selected our digital objects relating to Pokémon GO to save. How do we share such things? Would the preserving institution provide cellphones circa 2016 equipped with the app? What levels of data emulation would be employed once Niantic’s servers are shutdown? Is such a thing even possible or necessary?
Hi Dave. In a sense this is kind of a “do we preserve the whole train engine, or are pictures, blueprints, and stories about the train enough?” I was having a conversation about this recently with a friend of mine who is a landscape artist. Her opinion was interesting because to her the experience is the thing. Her argument was that truly recreating an artpiece is essentially impossible while maintaining context, and thus it was more important to collect the experience via oral history than anything else.
