  1. Hi Rosemary,

I said something similar in my post in terms of the tools – I didn’t feel completely comfortable recommending software to my clients either without a deeper understanding of how the tool worked.

I really like that you mentioned how the blog posts helped you in the development of your policy and next steps. I found it useful as well and I’m so glad Trevor decided to incorporate the blog into the course.

  2. Hi Rosemary,

I’ll admit it makes me happy to hear that you found my policy useful for your own institution and incorporated some of my ideas. Glad to know my recommendations weren’t completely off base. I like that you mentioned how you ended up interviewing your two contacts at the Bostwick house separately, and how that inadvertently led to more thorough information. I purposefully sent out individual surveys to the executive board instead of having a group meeting to discuss their thoughts because I thought I’d get more honest answers by having people get back to me on their own. That turned out to be the right move, as I got a lot of different perspectives that could have been not been voiced in a larger group discussion. I’m glad the two interviews also seemed to work out well for you project too.

  3. Rosemary,

I like your thoughts on recommending tools for the preservation policy assignment. I had similar problems when trying to recommend tools for my institution. I think the “less is more” idea is a very apt one. Keeping the policy simple is probably the best way to communicate clearly while allowing for evolution of the document in the future.

  4. Rosemary,
I also have to say that I really liked your less is more point as well. In some sense determining precisely what you don’t need to do is as important as figuring out what you actually need to do. This in a sense is largely why I liked the NDSA levels of digital preservation, because none of the steps suggested are incredibly drastic.

  5. Hi Scott,

Thank you! I also really liked the NDSA levels of digital preservation for the same reason. I also appreciated the grid as a visual; it communicates that an institution does not have to be at the same level for each characteristic, but can rather fall onto the grid at whichever levels best fit them.
